Zhan Zhuang (pronounced ‘Jam Jong’) is literally translated as pole standing. Master Lam Kam Chuen more poetically translated it as Standing like a Tree when he introduced Zhan Zhuang to the West in 1987.

Zhan Zhuang Chi Kung is primarily a set of stationary exercises practiced in well-balanced postures which increase the flow of energy in the body and build up internal strength. Externally, you appear to be motionless but in reality you are growing from within.

This system often surprises beginners because it appears to be so soft and gentle, combining, as it does, effort with relaxation – “As you practise, so you become relaxed; as you relax, so you develop your practice”.

The effects of this system however confound this initial impression, bringing more flexibility of the joints, mental alertness, and a great sense of ease and wellbeing. It stimulates, cleanses and massages the whole body, including the organs.

Zhan Zhuang Chi Kung is suitable for all ages and abilities – whether you are starting this system as a teenager or a pensioner you will find that with practice you will become fitter, calmer and more flexible.
