Chi Kung is a form of exercising that originated in China thousands of years ago and which benefits the whole body – muscles, joints, organs and nerves and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. A fuller explanation of chi kung can be found here.
The particular style of Chi Kung that I practise and teach is called Zhan Zhuang Chi Kung which is poetically translated as Standing Like a Tree. It involves simple movements and stationary postures which have the potential to build up the body’s natural energy (chi) or vitality. Some of the benefits that are attributed to chi kung exercises are stress reduction, strengthened nervous system, loosened muscles ligaments and joints, strengthened organs and boosted immune system*.
Master Lam Kam Chuen brought this art to the UK 35 years ago and has written many books about it such as The Way of Energy, The Way of Healing, Everyday Chi Kung. Channel 4 filmed Master Lam teaching this art in their series Stand Still, Be Fit.
I have been training directly with Master Lam Kam Chuen in London since 1997. He certified me to teach Zhan Zhuang Chi Kung in 2003. Since then I have taught this art in schools, in general classes and workshops and on meditation retreats.
You can read many books and articles about the benefits of Chi Kung. Personally, I have found that I am more agile and flexible, I can achieve more with less effort and I am less prone to illness. I feel more relaxed physically and mentally and I recover more quickly from strenuous activity without stiffness and aching. One regular comment from students is that they sleep much better after a Chi Kung class.
Whilst relatively new to the West, there has been some research into Tai Chi and Chi Kung (also spelt Qi Gong). The Harvard Medical School published a study of the benefits of Tai Chi and Chi Kung. See this article. In China these arts are practised by millions and there are Chi Kung hospitals and other hospitals with Chi Kung departments
